The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church preserves the broadest biblical canon in all of Christianity. While Protestant churches recognize 66 books, Catholics 73, and other Orthodox traditions 76-78, the Ethiopian Church has faithfully maintained 81 sacred books — including ancient texts found nowhere else in complete form.

1 Enoch — The Book of Enoch
መጽሐፈ ሄኖክ
One of the most significant books in the Ethiopian canon, 1 Enoch contains 108 chapters of apocalyptic visions, angelic encounters, and prophecies. It tells the story of the Watchers (fallen angels) who descended to earth, the Nephilim giants they fathered, and Enoch's journeys through heaven and the underworld. The book contains detailed cosmology, astronomy, and the Book of Parables which influenced early Christian messianic theology.
Quoted in Jude 14-15. Only survives complete in Ge'ez. Fragments found in Dead Sea Scrolls confirm ancient authenticity.
Jubilees — The Book of Division
ኩፋሌ
Also called the "Lesser Genesis," Jubilees retells the narrative from Genesis and early Exodus from the perspective of an angel dictating to Moses on Mount Sinai. It divides all of history into 49-year jubilee cycles and provides detailed chronologies, laws, and stories not found elsewhere. The book emphasizes strict Sabbath observance and calendar regulations, showing the Ethiopian Church's ancient roots.
Only survives complete in Ge'ez. Fragments at Qumran show it was highly valued in Second Temple Judaism.
I Meqabyan
መቃብያን
Despite the similar name, Meqabyan (I-III) are completely different books from the Greek Maccabees known in Catholic tradition. These Ethiopian books contain wisdom literature, moral teachings, and stories of righteous resistance. I Meqabyan focuses on five brothers who refuse to worship idols and choose martyrdom over apostasy, serving as profound examples of faithfulness under persecution.
Unique to Ethiopian tradition — no relation to 1-4 Maccabees found in Greek manuscripts.
II Meqabyan
መቃብያን
The second book of Meqabyan continues the wisdom tradition with teachings about righteous living, divine justice, and the importance of maintaining faith in adversity. It contains dialogues between teachers and students, parables about virtue and vice, and exhortations to trust in God's ultimate vindication of the faithful.
Part of the distinctive Ethiopian scriptural tradition preserved nowhere else in the Christian world.
III Meqabyan
መቃብያን
The third and final book of Meqabyan completes this uniquely Ethiopian trilogy. It emphasizes the covenant relationship between God and His people, the rewards of righteousness, and the consequences of turning away from divine law. The book serves as both historical narrative and theological reflection on the nature of true worship.
Together, the three books of Meqabyan form a cornerstone of Ethiopian moral and theological teaching.

Church Order & Apostolic Teaching
8 Books found only in the Ethiopian NT
Sinodos (Four Parts)
ስነ ዶስ
A four-part collection of apostolic canons and church orders that regulate worship, discipline, and ecclesiastical structure. Part I (Ser'ata Seyon) contains 30 canons; Part II (Te'ezaz) has 71 canons governing liturgy and clergy; Part III (Gessew) includes 56 canons on fasting and sacraments; Part IV (Abtelis) presents 81 canons on church governance and moral teaching. Together they form the constitutional foundation of Ethiopian church life.
Essential for understanding Ethiopian liturgical practice and ecclesiastical authority structure.
Ethiopic Clement (Two Parts)
ቀሌምንጦስ
Distinct from the 1 Clement and 2 Clement known in Western Christianity, the Ethiopic Clement is a unique work attributed to Clement of Rome. It contains teachings on church order, apostolic succession, moral instruction, and liturgical practice. The work emphasizes the continuity of apostolic teaching and the proper ordering of Christian community life according to early apostolic tradition.
Not to be confused with the Clementine Homilies or Recognitions — this is a distinct Ethiopian text.
Didascalia
ዲዳስቃልያ
An early Christian treatise on church order, liturgy, and moral teaching, preserved in its entirety in the Ethiopian canon. The 43 chapters cover topics including the role of bishops and deacons, proper conduct during worship, treatment of widows and orphans, penance and reconciliation, and the relationship between Old and New Covenant practices. It provides invaluable insight into early Christian community organization and ethical standards.
One of the oldest surviving church order documents, dating to the 3rd century.
Book of the Covenant (Two Parts)
መጽሐፈ ኪዳን
Also known as the Testamentum Domini, this work presents itself as post-resurrection teachings of Jesus to His disciples. It contains detailed instructions on liturgy, church architecture, the roles of clergy, sacramental practice, and eschatological teachings. The Book of the Covenant bridges theological instruction with practical church order, showing how apostolic communities were meant to live out their faith in worship and daily life.
Provides unique glimpses into ancient liturgical practices preserved in the Ethiopian tradition.
